Your character, Kurt, is the show’s fashionista and a key member of New Beginnings. How similar was your high school experience in Clovis, Calif.?
It was similar in the sense that I was definitely teased a lot in high school and I was definitely at the bottom of the food chain: total underdog, complete “Gleek.” I was never like Kurt at all; I wish I was now that I watch the show, but I was never fashionable. I wish I was like Kurt in high school! [Laughs]

Were you out in high school?
Oh, no. People are killed in my hometown for that.

Another sad reminder about how far we are from equality. Glad to see Kurt from Glee coming out to the public, but sad how he felt unsafe in high school.

U.S. District Judge Adalberto Jordan dismissed a lawsuit yesterday, essentially finding that the Jackson Memorial Hospital was within its rights to leave a dying woman alone while denying her present and immediate family to visit her, be updated on her condition, or even to provide the hospital with medically necessary information.

I keep hearing that this doesn't happen anymore, that all hospitals recognize gay relationships as legitimate in decision-making and visitation rights. This is simply NOT so. This wasn't even simply (as if it's simple...) a case of a partner not being there for her wife. This was about children who weren't allowed to be there while their mother was dying. It's about critical health information that wasn't allowed to be provided from the family because they weren't recognized as her immediate family.

This *has* to stop. It's more than time for equality. And this lawsuit was DISMISSED?! Where are our federal laws preventing this from occuring?

Our goal was to create a hypothetical gay couple whose situation would be similar to a heterosexual couple’s. So we gave the couple two children and assumed that one partner would stay home for five years to take care of them. We also considered the taxes in the three states that have the highest estimated gay populations — New York, California and Florida. We gave our couple an income of $140,000, which is about the average income in those three states for unmarried same-sex partners who are college-educated, 30 to 40 years old and raising children under the age of 18.

Here is what we came up with. In our worst case, the couple’s lifetime cost of being gay was $467,562. But the number fell to $41,196 in the best case for a couple with significantly better health insurance, plus lower taxes and other costs.
